Royal Racism?
by Jonathan David Makepeace

list of dominionsIt seems inoffensive enough, a list of the countries of whom the British monarch, Elizabeth II, is Queen.  But why that order: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica, etc.?  It isn't alphabetical, neither are the countries ranked by population, length of time as a dominion or even GNP.

One can't really be sure why Buckingham Palace chose to list the Commonwealth realms in that order, but it just happens that they appear in descending order by percentage of people of caucasian or European descent in their respective populations (figures from the CIA World Factbook):

Australia (92%)
New Zealand (69.8%)
Canada (66%)
Jamaica (0.2%)

Another plausible theory is that they are listed by their percentage of people of British extract.  It isn't language.  Jamaica has a higher percentage of people who speak English at home in its population than Canada, and Canada has more anglophones in absolute terms than any other dominion.

Note that Papua New Guinea wasn't given its own entry, even though it has a population larger than both Jamaica and New Zealand, which somehow managed not to be lumped in with the other South Pacific Islands despite actually consisting of islands and having fewer people than Papua New Guinea, which is no more an island than England is.  Perhaps there's a reason why the Maori refer to the Queen as the "white heron."

Is the monarchy racist?  You decide.
