A New Flag for Ontario

by Jonathan David Makepeace

I propose a flag inspired by the Canadian flag, with a white trillium, the floral emblem of Ontario.

Or, perhaps, a flag inspired by the coat of arms of Ontario, without the cross of St. George, patron saint of England:

The coats of arms of Canada, Ontario and Quebec all bear three maple leaves.  This reflects the pre-Confederation history of Ontario and Quebec under the respective names "Upper Canada" and "Lower Canada."  Ontario's maple leaves are gold on green, Quebec's are green on gold.  Indeed, one could say that the three maple leaves represent the new Canadian confederation arising out of Upper Canada (on the left) and Lower Canada (on the right).  This closely resembles Pearson's Pennant, the draft Canadian flag proposed by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, a great Ontarian.  (The single maple leaf on the Canadian flag represents Canadian national unity.)

The current flag is a Red Ensign with the Ontario coat of arms in the fly.  Not only does it have a colonial and sectarian character (the Union Jack is made up of the crosses of the patron saints of England, Ireland and Scotland), it is easily confused with other Red Ensigns, like Manitoba's:

The Manitoba and Ontario flags were rated the worst designed provincial or territorial flags in Canada in a 2001 survey by the North American Vexillological Association.

I'd appreciate your comments.  Better yet, why not write your MPP at Queen's Park?
